Hmm.....well, brownstones of course. Esp. now that I've got that fab custom tar paper roofing. :D

Other things that say "NYC" to me would be a bodega (little deli that sells pretty much everything, tucked into an impossibly small space), restaurants, skyscrapers, tiny parks and community gardens (yes, believe it or not there are some empty lots that people make into communal gardens, or communal outdoor art galleries - mostly down in the lower east and lower west side).  Bars, and shopping shopping shopping.  There are also a number of little playgrounds scattered throughout the city - some of them mostly concrete and others surprisingly nice.  What else...Most gyms were on the second floor of apartment buildings for some reason.  Apartment buildings typically had storefronts on the ground floor, and the apartments up above.  They all had basements with the mechanicals and laundry rooms, etc.  And most importantly - NO GRASS OUT FRONT!  Buildings went right up to the sidewalks, which were very wide.  You might see a tree in a planter out front, at the edge of the road, but that's it.  Even the private brownstones uptown don't have a front yard.

I'll think on it more, see if I can think of anything else.  Ah, this brings back memories...

Oh, yeah, and a Starbucks every ten feet.

Hey, Queenie. Do you want to do this for our next Build-n-Share 'hood? If so, we'll need to get sign-ups for fams up in about four or five weeks (I'm going to start spreading them out a little more...to about every 6 weeks rather than every four... because I think things will get a little more hectic for many of us in the fall) with sign-ups for lots the week after.

Just let me know. That's still a good bit of time away, so hopefully it works.

Everyone has great ideas =] Thanks so much for all the good ideas for the houses, its going to get me going faster on all these lots.  I was thinking of maybe having it in river view but i wasn't sure.  and Addict- Sure it could be for Build-n-Share, I will have a lot of time on my hands coming up in the next week to get all the lots done so in about 2 weeks i should be done with all the lots and maybe one more for the families =]

The brookly bridge comes to mind but I don't know how it could possibly be done. :) Nice idea for a neighborhood.

i've never been to NYC, but maybe some buildings with storefront access on the bottom and living spaces up top?

Fancy Homes, Park Avenue, Fancy Hotels like the Waldorf, the four seasons, the bryant park, the plaza. Famous skyscaper replicas- like the flatiron, the trump building, the crystler. The NY public library, Macys, Yankee Stadium, Grand Central, Madison Sqaure Garden. Museums- The guggenhein (would be hard) The Met As for the WTC, do we want to put in a WTC, or a WTC tribute/memorial? Maybe a church or two, i've seen pics of skyscrapers next to amazing churches. Central Park of course, and Broadway of course :)

ooh, this site is cool- http://www.emporis.com/en/wm/ci/bu/?id=101028

and a reference site for architecture http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Architecture_of_New_York_City

I would love to see the brooklyn bridge made, but i have no idea where we would put it.

I also think a few little homes here and there on the outskirts of the "City" would be a nice touch.

OK,

Maybe we could move it up a little then, if you'll be ready. We'll have to budget time with Anju, too. I'll be contacting her soon to work out the schedule for the next month or two. We'll keep you in-the-loop. I did understand in your PM that you do want it for Build-n-Share, on the main site, right? I just want to make sure it's what you're hoping for. :)

soho village

grandcentral

times square

park ave

broadway

and if I could I would like to say after watching the first and participating in the second

I would make the nieghborhood projects a month long event

announce, signup for family, one week for family

second announce and signup, for lot assignmets

two weeks to make, last week for turn in..

that way the project would be a constant monthly thing with bns challenges weekly
